Grammy award winners/Smithsonian Folkways recording artists, Max Baca & Los Texmaniacs, are the new worldwide ambassadors of Texas Roots/Tex-Mex music.
Max carries the tradition learned as a thirteen-year member of the original kings of Tex-Mex, Doug Sahm's Texas Tornados, and as right hand man to Tex-Mex accordion legend (2012 NEA National Heritage/five time Grammy winner), Flaco Jimenez.
Building on this foundation, Max formed Los Texmaniacs in 1997 combining traditional roots music with contemporary vitality and musicianship.
Max is the premier first-call Bajo Sexto (a traditional twelve-string guitar-like instrument) player in the world. He has appeared on eleven Grammy-winning projects with artists as diverse as The Rolling Stones, Ricky Skaggs, Los Super Seven, Lila Downs, and Texas Tornados.
Los Texmaniacs' current release "Americano Groove" (2015) was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. The release is a progressive Tex-Mex album featuring collaborations with Alejandro Escovedo, Joe Ely, as well as country artists Kevin Fowler & Rick Trevino. Los TexManiacs' previous albums—"Texas Towns & Tex-Mex Sounds" (Latin Grammy-nominated) and the Grammy-winning "Borders Y Bailes" (both on Smithsonian Folkways)—combine a mix of traditional polka, waltz, bolero, redova, danzon, & Schottische, with western swing and conjunto. You will hear elements of rock 'n roll, blues, and jazz riffs keeping the music fresh and exciting, helping attract new audiences.
Los Texmaniacs' highly energetic live performances are equally contagious, and diverse. They have performed at The Kennedy Center, The Library of Congress, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Smithsonian Folk Festival, Vancouver Island Music Fest, Hong Kong World Music Fest, California Strawberry Festival, Rhythm & Roots Rhode Island, Minnesota State Fair and National Council for Traditional Arts "Don't Fence Me In Tour". Los TexManiacs have performed on Austin City Limits, NPR, A Prairie Home Companion, and American Routes. The band is representing Texas Roots music worldwide. They have shared their Tex-Mex flavor & culture with Russia, China, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Argentina. Los Texmaniacs are most proud of their four different tours to entertain the troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Kosovo.
The current band members are Max Baca on vocals and bajo sexto, Josh Baca on accordion, Noel Hernandez on bass and 2nd vocal, and Danny Martinez on drums.
